January 10, 2003 - Arlington, Virginia

Dr. David L. Schertz, National Agronomist, retired on January 3, 2003 after 33+ years of Federal service.   On Friday January 10th, many of Dave's friends celebrated with him at Tom Sarri's Orleans House in Arlington, Virginia.   In the picture below, Dave (center) is with his wife, Sharron, on the left and Ecological Sciences Division Director, Diane Gelburd, on the right.

Mark Safley hosted the celebration with a nice mix of subtle humor and seriousness.   Larry Clark gave the Invocation, and later presented Dave with a framed copy of the Conservation Agronomy Manual.   Jackie Diggs proposed a Retirement Toast.   Dave's friends presented him with several gifts.   In the picture below, Lee Herndon (NRCS) and Dick Amerman (ARS), cochairs of the Partnership Management Team (PMT), present Dave with a commemorative coffee mug on behalf of the entire Team.   Dave was a charter member of the PMT and part of the group that "invented" it.

Dave began his career as a Soil Conservationist in Pekin, Illinois, February 14, 1969.   After one year at Pekin, he took a leave of absence to pursue his Masters Degree in Agronomy at the University of Illinois.  In 1971, he became the District Conservationist in Decatur, Illinois.   He served as State Agronomist for Illinois from 1973-1975.   He then moved to Reston, Virginia, and represented the agency on a remote sensing team for two years.   In 1977 he was selected to be State Agronomist for California.   In January 1979, he returned to Illinois as State Resource Conservationist.

In the fall of 1980, he was selected to be the first SCS liaison with the ARS National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory, West Lafayette, Indiana, where he acquired his Ph.D. in Agronomy at Purdue University.   In 1983, he was selected for the position of National Conservation Tillage Agronomist at National Headquarters in Washington, DC.   In February 1986, he was selected to be the National Agronomist.

ALL of your FRIENDS wish you MANY, MANY happy years of RETIREMENT!!
